Your appliances are vampires
Up to 40% of the electricity consumed in your home and office is used while things are off. Even if they're powered down, many machines still consume electricity to stay "ready" so there's no delay on startup. Anything with a digital clock is a vampire. Why should you pay your electronics to suck up your power while you aren't home? There's two easy ways to handle vampires: power strips and timers. Power strips let you kill power to an item that's not in use by simply shutting down the whole strip. No having to crawl under your desk to unplug the item. In its something that you want to turn on or off at a specific point to be ready for your arrival, you can buy a simple power timer for a few dollars. These are particularly handy for things like coffee pots, decorative lights, etc where you may want them on or off at specific times but they don't need to suck power for eight hours while you aren't around to enjoy them.
