What is a phallocrypt? Phallocrypts are a type of traditional men's clothing still worn in some parts of New Guinea and Indonesia. They are decorative penis sheaths made from gourds. Like the loincloth, these are intended to provide modesty in a tropical climate without making the wearer sweat any more than necessary. They key part here is that no cloth is involved, making these easy to clean. Attempts to introduce Western style clothing into these areas have often resulted in outbreaks of skin problems due to the difficulty cleaning cloth in area with limited access to soap and clean water. Most phallocrypts are fairly basic functional affairs. However, for ceremonial occasions, people may have elaborate ones decorated with beads, cowrie shells, or feathers or painted and inscribed with designs. They are effectively elaborate wearable pieces of art. These ceremonial ones are popular with art collectors. Native groups have caught on to this and many sold to art collectors are not actual cultural artifacts, they are pieces made specifically for the tourist market.
