Stop the spread of toxoplasmosis

If you have a cat, you may be tempted to flush away the cat litter. However, cats can carry toxoplasmosis. This may be familiar to some people as the reason pregnant women aren't supposed to change the litter box, since there is a small risk it may harm the baby. (most humans have developed an immunity to toxoplasmosis, so its a very small risk)

Now some research indicates sea otters may be at risk for toxoplasmosis. Sewage treatment plants strip out most other bacteria and pathogens, but aren't equipped to remove the oocysts that transmit toxoplasmosis. Treated waste water is then released into nearby rivers and lake (which eventually makes its way to the sea) where it can be ingested by other animals or people.

Sea otters seem to be particularly vulnerable to toxoplasmosis because they both swim in the water and eat shellfish that can harbor the parasite. Scientists suspect other species may be affected, but haven't done enough research to prove that theory. There have also been some human cases of toxoplasmosis traced to infected shellfish that probably got infected from cat feces in water.

So don't scoop the cat box into the toilet. Toss it in the trash instead. California residents, you may have noticed a mysterious label on your cat litter telling you to throw it in the trash, not flush. This is why.

Really want to cut down on toxoplasmosis transmission? Have an indoor cat. Cats pick up the parasite by eating mice and small birds. Keep your kitties indoors and they can't pick up the parasite in the first place.
