Saving the Pacific Salmon Wild salmon are on the decline in the Pacific Northwest and much of western Canada due to habitat pressure, pollutions, dams and a host of other problems. It's not one thing that's a problem, its a host of things, including farm raised salmon! Farmed salmon are often raised in pens where wild salmon once lived and may introduce parasites or diseases into the remaining wild population The Wild Salmon Center is a charity that hopes to save the remaining wild salmon and help restore the population by conserving whole ecosystems. Because salmon traverse the whole length of a river from sea to the headwaters, they serve as great indicators of the overall health of the river and the creatures that depend on it. If salmon are healthy and abundant, the river is obviously in good shape. If salmon are doing poorly, they want to identify what is causing the decline and what other creatures are affected. In addition to work in the Pacific Northwest and Canada, the Wild Salmon Center does extensive work in Eastern Russia, especially Kamchatka. Those areas are still largely pristine and have thriving salmon and trout populations. Studying those intact populations can help determine what exactly is hurting populations elsewhere and what should be top priority.
