Saving the Amazon with GPS units

The Amazon Conservation Team is a charity that seeks to help preserve the Amazon rainforest by helping indigenous people retain claim to their land and continue to live on it in traditional ways.

One of their major initiatives is helping native peoples map out their lands and substantiate their land claims against miners, ranchers, and other groups intent on cutting down the rainforest. How are they doing that in a huge forest where landmarks vanish quickly? With GoogleEarth and GPS units! They train locals in how to use them to map out and mark their tribe's ancestral territories so if anyone intrudes they can prove right away they're on the wrong side of the boundary line. No arguing about fences or landmarks, they can point right at the GPS coordinates.

Why conserve native cultures? The cultural knowledge built up by local cultures about the local environment can be lost in the space of only a generation or two. With the thousands of species native to the Amazon, many of them plants with possible uses in medicine, losing that knowledge would be akin to burning all the libraries in a country.

ACT also sponsor programs to help native youths stay in their local community and apprentice with traditional shamans and healers to make sure all that cultural knowledge is passed on. Shamans are integrated into traditional western style medical clinics that serve the local populations.

Are you a MySpace junkie? They have a Myspace page full of videos, links to magazine articles, and beautiful pictures of the native amerindian peoples of the Amazon.

If you're a federal employee, in the armed services, or a postal worker, they are a Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) charity. You can designate a dollar amount to have deducted from each pay check.
