Saving retired race horses
When horses racing days are done they rarely get put out to pasture to enjoy a happy retirement. While some famous racers are kept for stud, most are put up for sale and a lot of them go direct to the slaughterhouse. The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is a charity that rescues retired racers and either put them out to pasture or retrains them for use second careers as companions, handicapped riding horses, and even show jumpers. TRF operates several facilities attached to prisons. The farm retrains horses and provides vocational training to inmates. They started with one prison but now operate similar programs at six. While providing useful vocational training to inmates, it also helps many of them cope with emotional or mental issues by learning to care for a another living creature. TRF also operates a facility called Out2Pasture which is a facility where their sickest and most infirm horses are sent. It has a partnership with the University of Missouri to serve as a training farm where veterinary students can practice their skills. TRF ideally likes to rehome horses with new owners either as working horses or pets but some horses are simply too infirm to be adopted out. These horses are retired to one of their facilities and cared for for the rest of their natural lifespan. Truly sick animals may need to be stalled, but ones that are simply too infirm to be ridden are generally placed with herds so they can enjoy some company during their retirement. |
