Save a Sato dog rescue
Save a Sato works to rescue stray dogs off the streets of Puerto Rico and send them to no-kill shelters in the mainland US that have space. Most rescued satos are small breed puppies, just the sort of thing people looking for a new pet want in an apartment dog. Many US shelters have been so successful with spay and neuter programs that they simply don't have puppies anymore, so many potential adopters go to pet stores instead, getting dogs from puppy mills. Everybody wins with satos. Recently, the city of Barceloneta hired contractors to seize pets in a housing project. They seized any pet they could find (cats, dogs, whatever), injected them with something said to be a sedative, then drove to a nearby bridge and flung the animals off the side. Yes, you read that right. They grabbed people's pets and threw them off a bridge. Alive. This is sadly, not uncommon. There is such an overpopulation problem, its not uncommon for live puppies to be thrown in the trash or put in a cardboard box and set on fire.
