Rhode Island Zoological Society The Rhode Island Zoological Society supports the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence Rhode island. It is one of only two zoos in New England accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums which sets tough standards for the health, safety, and comfort of animals. Like most zoos, it has various conservation programs aimed at captive breedings of charismatic large animals including the Red Wolf. What's unusual is that they are also involved in insect conservation. Bugs just don't get much love. Their two main insect projects are butterfly conservation and reintroduction of the American burying beetle. At least butterflies are pretty! The American Burying Beetle is pretty unlovable but important. They once ranged the entire eastern and central US, but the only stable population east of the Mississippi is on Block Island in Rhode Island. What do these bugs do? They bury animal carcasses, helping return nutrients to the soil and prevent the spread of disease. Of course, anything that nests in dead animals doesn't exactly top the popularity charts, thus why conservation is important. You probably won't see these guys on a t-shirt.
