RARE conservation- save the world with mascots
RARE trains local conservation advocates in ecology, conservation, biodiversity, community-based conservation, and marketing. Yes, marketing. They pick a rare, charismatic local species and use it as the mascot for their campaign to get the community to take pride in their natural resources and the rare species in their care. This includes getting the mascot species on campaign material, billboards, comic books, on bus stops, payphones, etc. and engaging with children through educational programs, puppet shows and visits with costumed mascots! The theory being to make that rare charismatic species as well recognized, and cherished as the local sports team. Local people will want to save the species and its habitat because its a symbol of pride for their community. |
