Properly disposing of medication Switched prescriptions and left with half a bottle of something? Don't toss it out, send it for recycling or proper disposal. Many people flush meds down the toilet to make sure animals don't get into them in the trash. But even if you do throw them in the trash, they may still leach into the water supply if they get wet. Roughly 80% of waterways in the US have tested positive for pharmaceuticals like antibiotics and birth control pills. These aren't standardly screened out of water by municipal filtration. Some scientists also point at the remains of birth control pills in the water as being partially behind a drop in sperm count in industrialized countries. And think of people with a severe allergic reaction to some antibiotics! The local water may be what's making them sick! You can try calling the local hospital or pharmacy to see if they have a program that takes half used prescriptions for redistribution to those that can't afford a prescription. If that is not available, you should have it disposed of properly. If you are in the US, you can use Earth 911 to find both types of programs. Input "drugs" and your zip code.
