Promoting classical music to minorities

Sphinx is a US based charity dedicated to increasing minority participation in classical music. It was founded by Aaron Dworkin, a professional violinist, in 1996 in response to how few African American and Latino musicians were involved in classical music.

Sphinx helps raise the profile of minorities in classical music through its programs, including the Sphinx symphony which consists entirely of African American and Latino performers. The Sphinx symphony performs works by African American and Latino composers. The members also teach master classes and serve as personal mentors to minority students considering a degree in music. They have also commissioned original musical works from minority composers.

They hold an annual competition to find the best and brightest minority students trained on string instruments. Winners win a scholarship through a partnership with the American Symphony Orchestra League. Semi finalists also get the loan of a high quality instrument for a year while they get special training from mentors and professionals. These are top of the line instruments often from private collections or from world renowned instrument makers.

Sphinx arranges visits by members of its orchestra and scholarship programs to inner city schools while they're traveling between performances. Performers do short performances for students that may never have gotten to see live music in person, let alone a black or Latino performer playing classical instruments like the violin or cello. They're small groups so that students get a chance to talk to the performer about how they got started in classical music, why they picked that instrument, and how they could get involved in music.
