Native American Heritage Foundation

The Native American Heritage Association is a charity that serves the Pine Ridge Lakota reservation in South Dakota. This is the poorest county in the entire US with 63% of people living below the poverty line and with 70% unemployment. NAHA's most important ongoing program is operating a food bank.

South Dakota's winters are brutal, often falling to subzero temperatures. NAHA provides families with school age children a voucher each labor day to buy new winter gear for their kids so they can attend school. If they don't have the right gear, children are often kept home because of the fear of frostbite. Many homes on the reservation are unheated, even in brutal winters. Or the residents run out of money to pay for heat. This leads to sad stories such as this article about a grandmother froze to death in -17 degree weather because she could not afford to heat her home. NAHA helps purchase stoves and heating oil. They also provide equipment to cut wood for stoves and truck in wood from elsewhere in South Dakota.

In addition to this, the area is very isolated so if something does go wrong, help is often far away. Many residents don't own cars, and even if they did, don't have the money for gas. Many residents are 50 to 100 miles from the nearest hospital. Thus NAHA operates two wheelchair accessible vans to bring residents to Rapid City hospital. They also operate an overnight facility in Rapid City where people getting dialysis or chemotherapy can stay instead of being in the hospital.
