National Wild Turkey Federation
Hunting and conservation don't seem like a natural fit, but sportsman are often some of the most ardent supporters of preserving wildlife habitat. The National Wild Turkey Federation seeks to preserve both turkeys and the hunting traditions surrounding them. Founded in 1973 when there were around 1.3 million wild turkeys left in the US, the NWTF has preserved more than 13 million acres of turkey habitat and the population has rebounded to more than 7 million turkeys, even with increased hunting. In addition to preserving land, they help private land owners manage their property to provide better habitat for turkeys. They also work with electric companies to manage the millions of acres of high tension power line right aways as wildlife habitat. Along with the usual conservation efforts, they have three other interesting programs. One helps hunters donate turkeys they've hunted to local soup kitchens and food pantries. Another one is a feather distribution project where hunters may send in feathers so they may be passed onto various Native American tribes that use them in religious ceremonies but may no longer have stable wild turkey populations near them. The last really interesting program they sponsor is Wheelin' Sportman which is a magazine dedicated to outdoor activities for the disabled. The focus is on hunting and fishing, but is also covers how to find general outdoor gear to meet special needs. |
