Humane Society of South Mississippi The Humane Society of South Mississippi, like other local animal welfare groups, provides the usual rescue and adoption services to the region as well as low cost spay and neuter clinics. Despite their efforts to reduce pet overpopulation, they still have a major pet overpopulation problem in part due to the hurricanes that have battered the coast in recent years. Unfixed pets that had been kept confined escaped from yards and onto the streets to breed... and breed... and breed. Hurricane Katrina also highlighted another problem in the area, most lost pets were never reunited with their owners. Many lost tags in the storm, or if they still had them, the home was flattened and the people gone with no new address. So HSSM has started offering free and low cost micro-chipping clinics. Once chipped, vets and shelters can simply run a scanner over the pet to get the ID number. Then they simply contact the chipping service to get contact info and report the pet found. Pet owners can contact the registry to find out if their pet has been found yet and update the contact info, even if they don't have a new permanent address yet.
