How organic is your organic coffee?

Is that organic coffee you're buying really 100% organic?

When coffee is harvested and processed it is certified as organic or as conventionally grown. It is then passed on to a roaster. He may handle both types of coffee. If he is not certified as an organic roaster, this means he processes both types of coffee on the same equipment.

This is sort of like how on some food products you may see the note "processed on the same equipment as peanuts". There won't actually be nuts in your product, but there may be nut residue.

The same holds true for a coffee roaster. Some of the pesticides and residue on the conventionally grown beans may show up in trace amounts in organically grown coffee processed on the same equipment. An certified organic roaster either processes all his organic coffee on separate equipment or has to clean all his equipment in a very special way regulated by the government to be certified as an organic roaster.

If you have chosen organically grown coffee because of extreme chemical sensitivity, make sure that not only was it grown organically, but that it was prepared on the right equipment!

Contributor's Note

Info came from discussions with a nearby business owner on difficulty of actually being certified as an organic roaster.
