Help elderly Holocaust survivors

Someday The Blue Card charity will no longer have a reason to exist. It may close its doors and vanish, or may turn to making sure that it never has a reason to exist again.

The Blue Card was founded in Germany in 1934 to assist Jews fleeing the country. It later moved to the US to assist Holocaust survivors. Named after the original blue cards that were used to mark donations, it exists to provide direct financial assistance to the now elderly Holocaust survivors that live in poverty and may have severe medical problems due to internment. Many of them have no remaining family to assist them.

The Blue Card has several major programs. One provides monthly rent or utility assistance to elderly survivors so that they don't have to be forced out of their homes again. They also provide emergency grants to cover medical bills or presciptions not covered by government programs. They also provide telephone emergency response systems to those living alone. And finally they provide a small amount of cash to elders at the holidays so they can afford to celebrate the High Holy Days, Hannukah, and Passover.

The majority of their recipients live in New York City because of the large immigrant Jewish population there, but they do provide assistance to Holocaust survivors elsewhere in the US or abroad that are living in poverty.
