Finding forever homes for foster kids

There are more than 140,000 children in the foster care system in North America. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption has a simple goal: find all those children a forever home.

Social workers don't normally have enough time to supervise all the kids in their care AND recruit families looking to recruit. Thus the DTFA funds Wendy's Wonderful Kids, a team of 102 recruiters in all 50 states of the US to actively recruit prospective families. Much like corporate headhunters or college recruiters, they seek out families that might have considered adoption previously but weren't sure they could wend their may through the mountains of paperwork and bureaucracy.

They also encourage large employers to offer adoption benefits, just like most offer benefits to a family that had a baby. Most offer financial compensation to help cover the administrative costs of adoption (there's a LOT of paperwork), but many also offer paid or unpaid leave so parents can spend a weeks or months settling their new family member into the home.

DTFA also lobbies state and national governments to streamline the adoption process while still making sure children are placed with loving families. While many lower income families are capable of taking care of adopted child quite well, the high legal costs associated with adoption make it impossible for them to do so.

DTFA also has a Canadian arm that deals specifically with the adoption rules in Canada.
