Emergency Animal Rescue Service
The United Animal Nations is a US based animal welfare charity. It's primary program is the Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) which trains volunteers to rescue animals during disasters. Natural disasters quickly overwhelm local animal organizations, so EARS volunteers basically serve as the animal version of the National Guard, ready to come in and assist local groups. Volunteers are trained is rescue and care techniques, as well as methods for tracking down owners so they can be reunited with their lost pet. There other major program is the Premarin Awareness Campaign and PMU Rescue. What's Premarin? It's the most widely prescribed hormone replacement treatment in the US. It's manufactured from the urine of pregnant horses. Horses are kept in stalls they can't turn around in to make urine collection easy. And of course this only works with pregnant horses, so shortly after the foals are born, they're sold off (whether they're weaned or not) and the mare is immediately re-bred. Some of those foals end up as companion animals, but a lot end up as dog chow. (premarin is also sold as Prempro and Premphase) To make things worse, many contracts with farm forbid the owners from working with animal rescues because the drug manufacturers don't want people getting the impression such animals need rescuing. The Premarin Awareness Campaign run by UAN seeks to get people to switch drugs to something that isn't produced by this method and to eventually phase out the drug entirely. As farms close down as drug demand wanes, however, this means there's lots of horses up on the auction block. PMU Rescue seeks to place both foals and horses used in Premarin production in new homes where they can be companion animals. Many of these horses are actually registered horses, but can be tough to place because the draft breeds were most popular for Premarin production. If you've always wanted your very own Percheron or Clydsdale, this may be a great rescue to look at. |
