Educating girls in Afghanistan & Pakistan
Greg Mortenson nearly died trying to climb K2, the second highest mountain on earth. He became separated from his group of climbers and was lost and alone in northern Pakistan without food, water, and shelter. He stumbled into a Pakistani village where he was nursed back to health. After observing the local children scratching their lessons in the dirt with sticks he swore he would pay back the villagers kindness by returning to build them a real school. After many years trying to raise funds, he eventually paired up with Silicon valley pioneer and Swiss physicist Dr. Jean Hoerni. Dr Hoerni provided the funds to set up the Central Asia Institute while Greg Mortenson provided the necessary experience in just how hard it was to work in such a remote area. Central Asia Institute works to build schools and train teachers in some of the most remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan, areas that are largely closed to outsiders due to security concerns. They work particularly in Baltistan, an area of Pakistan occupied by the Balti, an ethnic minority. There are Shi'ite Muslims, though ethnically are more closely related to the Tibetans. CAI uses local materials and labor in its building and training projects to ensure the community is invested in the school and it will continue to be maintained long after the initial building process. As one of the conditions attached to building a school, CAI obtains promises from the local elders and mullahs to increase girls enrollment in school by 10% each year. Their emphasis is particularly on educating girls and on training women as teachers. As the core of communities, educated women make for educated children. So far, CAI has built 45 schools in Pakistan and enrolled more than 7,000 children in school (at least half of them girls) when they would never have otherwise received any formal education. They have build 8 schools in Afghanistan and enrolled nearly 8,000 students, including almost 6,000 girls. They also provides teacher training and funds for school books to already established schools. You can read more about Central Asia Institute's mission, Greg Mortenson's amazing story, and how they believe the best way to fight terrorism is through poverty relief and education in Mortenson's New York Times best selling book Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
