Cowboy Poetry The Western Folklife Center is a charity that seeks to preserve and promote the oral culture of the American west includes songs and stories. They produce segments for National Public Radio and documentaries that have aired on PBS. While their focus is on cowboys and ranchers, they also seek to preserve the unique songs and stories of the various immigrants groups, such as the Basques, that have made a mark on the American west but are virtually unknown in the rest of the US. Their largest event is the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Cowboys and poetry don't exactly seem to go together, but this isn't exactly the sort of formulaic poetry you're taught in school. This is poetry meant to be recited out on the range, a descendant of the epic poetry or yore. You can watch video and listen to recording of the 2008 National Cowboyboy Gathering online.
