Biking for affordable housing
Bike and Build is a non-profit that organizes cross country bike trips to raise money for affordable housing. Participants bike cross country with a group, stopping at several destinations on each route to help out on an affordable housing construction site. Trips are usually around a month long. Participation in the cycling part is open to 18-25 year olds in good physical condition. They will be provided with a bike by the organization which they can keep at the end of the trip. There's designated rest stops each day for meals and riders usually spend the night at a school, church, or host home. They'll have some daily chores to do for the group (such as laundry, helping make dinner, etc) and will usually be asked to make a presentation at the hosts location about affordable housing and why they're participating in the cross country trip. The goal is to get young people interested in the issue of affordable housing and advocacy in general. By providing the trip of the lifetime along with an opportunity to help others, Bike and Build hopes to instill a life long interest in public service in each generation.
