Better living through smell: The Monell Chemical Senses Center

There's lots of science oriented charities dedicated to solving a specific problem like curing breast cancer or turning plants into fuel. Applied science is generally adequately funded because it's clear its doing something. Basic scientific research is often poorly funded because it's not always clear what it's good for. Consider it like a building. Painting the home is awesome and its obvious you've made a change. That's applied science. Basic research is like digging the initial test hole at a building plot to determine what kind of soil you have before you start designing a foundation. Basic research is not sexy.

The Monell Chemical Sense Center is a non-profit research center that conducts basic research into how humans perceive the world, specifically how we smell and taste the world. This includes how different individuals perceive the world as children, adults, and the elderly may react totally differently to a specific smell. They also study how various diseases may effect smell and taste.

On the applied side, this basic research can help scientists determine how people make food choices, which can be applied to all kinds of research on obesity, diabetes, and any other medical issue where diet is a major factor. They also study the same sort of things in animals and have been working with the Department of Agriculture to discover what smells can be used to attract or repel animals. This may lead to being able to use odors to keep endangered species inside protected areas or drive invasive species away from crops.

The Monell center receives about half its funding from the government and the other half comes from charitable contributions from businesses and individuals.
