American Chestnut Foundation- reforesting the US
Once upon a time the American Chestnut was one of the most wide spread trees in the world, occupying 200 million acres of land in the US. In Us forest, 1 in 4 trees was a chestnut. Then came the chestnut blight and in a 30 year period, virtually all of them were dead. 4 billion trees dead due to a introduced fungus. This is a relatively recent event, as it occurred in the first half of the twentieth century. This was devastating to many rural area as not only did they lose their trees, they lost a major source of their economy as they provided both food and timber. The American Chestnut Foundation is working on breeding a blight resistant chestnut by backcrossing the American chestnut to the blight resistant Chinese chestnut. The eventual goal is to create a chestnut that is about 95% American chestnut and only 5% Chinese. Just enough to make it blight resistant, but still retaining the character of the original tree. This is a 30-50 year project depending on how quickly they can get trees to mature. Once a blight resistant tree is available, the goal is to reforest the Eastern US so it appears as it once did less than 100 years ago. |
