Adopt a Native Elder program
The Adopt-a-Native Elder program gives direct aid to Navajo (or Dine' ) elders living the traditional way on the reservations in Arizona and southern Utah. How traditional? Many of the 80-109 (!!!) year old elders still raise their own sheep, spin the wool and hand dye it with natives plants while living in remote one room hogans twenty miles from the nearest road. Some of them only speak Navajo. ANE provides food, medical supplies, and assists elders in selling their goods (primarily traditional rugs) so they can continue living their lives the traditional way. The idea is to provide just enough help so they can still continue living independent lives off the land as their ancestors did. For reader's unfamiliar with the Navajo, they are the most populous native group in the Americas, with roughly 340,000 members. Navajos serving in the marine corps during WWII were used to transmit coded messages in their native tongue. They're also well known as skilled artisans in silversmithing and rug weaving. There is a popular American mystery series by Tony Hillerman that focuses on a Navajo policeman. |
